Kidnapping: Ogbomoso Consultative Council holds rally Monday, to form joint security taskforce

Perplexed by the worsening security situation in the zone, Ogbomoso Consultative Council, OCC, under the triumvirate leadership of General Oladayo Popoola (rtd), a former military governor of old Oyo and Ogun states; Justice Afolabi Adeniran (rtd), an ex-Chief Justice of Oyo state; and Dr Saka Balogun, a former university don, has slated for Monday, August 8, a sensitization rally on security, starting 9:00am.

The event, which is scheduled to come up at Takie Square in the city, is expected to be attended by a large crowd of residents.

This information is contained in a press release issued by the broad-based socio-cultural organization and obtained by Star Potter

Recall that in the last three weeks about three different cases of kidnappings took place in parts of Surulere local government area of the zone in which ransoms were collected before the victims were released (in the first two incidents) while the abductors heartlessly killed their two victims and the motorcyclist that conveyed the person that took the ransom money to them in the last incident early this week.

The dastardly act sparked widespread outrage and thus a need to explore all measures towards combatting the menace.

The press release titled, “Security deterioration: Ogbomoso to hold awareness rally,” states, “In view of the deteriorating security situation in Ogbomoso zone, as evident in recent waves of kidnapping for ransom and killing of victims, the Ogbomoso Consultative Council (OCC) led by Major General Oladayo Popoola OFR rtd, Justice Afolabi Adeniran (rtd) and Dr Saka Balogun in consultation with the elders of the community and in conjunctions with the youths (under the aegis of the Ogbomoso Community Youth Forum, OCYF) will be holding a rally to create awareness on the fear-inducing phenomenon.”

The release further informs that the organization would assist in putting together a joint security task force to improve the security architecture in the zone.

It asserts the task force to compose of military, police, DSS, Civil Defence Corps as well as traditional security groups like hunters, vigilante members, Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) operatives and so on, will be involved in surveillance, intelligence gathering and intensive patrol.

“Subsequently, a joint security patrol team comprising the military, the police, SSS, Civil Defence Corps, local hunters, OPC and legion of ex-servicemen will be put in place to undertake intensive patrol, efficient intelligence gathering and effective surveillance, across the five local government areas in Ogbomoso zone towards beefing up security and forestalling future occurrences,” assuring, “all bad eggs, perpetrators and collaborators will be brought to book.”

Giving assurance of adequate security at the venue, the group warns, ‘We can’t be in deep slumber or reduce ourselves to mere lamentations like weaklings while terrorists prowl our land.”
