More varsities reopen and shun ongoing strike as Nigerians await outcome of ASUU NEC meeting

More public institutions have ordered students and lecturers to resume their regular academic activities in response to the Academic Staff Union of Universities’ (ASUU) ongoing strike.

Remember that the current ASUU strike began on February 14 and was just extended for an additional four weeks, ending today, Monday, August 29, 2022.

Release of funding for university revitalization, revision of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement, payment of earned allowances for university lecturers, and implementation of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution are all demands made by the union (UTAS).

Following a meeting with the union two weeks prior, Adamu Adamu, the minister of education, declared that all of the union’s demands had been met with the exception of the fact that its members would not be receiving arrears from the strike period.

Additionally, the union has emphasised that the strike won’t end until the outstanding debt is paid.

However, other universities, particularly state-owned universities, have backed off and resumed classes while the strike continues.

A few months into the strike, the administration of Osun State University (Uniosun) said that the university has no intention of participating in labour unrest and asked students to resume the rain semester.

Last month, the Kaduna State University (KASU) administration decided against going on strike after governor Nasir el-Rufai threatened to fire the teachers if they didn’t start lectures again since they had no disagreement with the state government.

The most recent institution to order both returning and new students to start classes today is the Ekiti State University (EKSU).

According to a statement from the university’s registrar, Mr. Ife Oluwole, stakeholders convened to discuss the situation.

He claimed that they had taken note of the socioeconomic effects the present strike by the university employee unions was having on many stakeholders (parents, students, alumni and staff).

The university’s teeming student body, the parents of those students, and the institution’s continued existence, the registrar noted, all of the university’s staff members who are currently on strike have to return to work today. This decision was made after lengthy discussion at the meeting.

Nigerians are waiting for the results of the ASUU National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in the meantime.

Whether the union would extend the strike that has kept the majority of public colleges in the nation locked up will be decided at the NEC meeting scheduled for Sunday night/Monday am.

However, a dependable source within the union claimed that the union would continue the industrial action barring any last-minute changes of heart.
