Qatar government rejects Buhari’s proposed visit, asks him to reapply in 2023
President Muhammadu Buhari’s scheduled state visit to Qatar in September 2022 has been rejected by the country’s administration, led by Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who has asked him to reapply in 2023.
The proposed visitation dates “are not adequate,” according to a memo sent to the ministry of foreign affairs by the Qatari embassy in Abuja on August 19, 2022.
According to the note, Nigeria had officially informed Buhari that he had “agreed to visit Qatar on September 11–12, 2022, at the request of H.H. Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, Emir of the State of Qatar.”
The federal government was directed to suggest a new date for the visit, preferably “within the first quarter of the year 2023,” nevertheless.
According to a statement, “The Embassy of the State of Qatar in Abuja extends its compliments to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Regions Department) and with reference to the latter’s note M 403/2022 dated 12/08/2022 informing that H.E. Muhammadu Buhari, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, has accepted to visit Qatar on September 11–12, 2022, at the invitation of H.H. Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Th
The proposed dates for the visit, according to the Qatari embassy, “are not suitable and we sincerely beg the Nigerian side to propose other dates for the visit during the first quarter of the year 2023
The statement said, “The Embassy of the State of Qatar avails itself of this opportunity to repeat the promise of its utmost consideration to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Regions Department).
According to information obtained, the Middle Eastern nation’s preparations for the 2022 World Cup are the reason for the planned visit’s rejection.
Later this year, from November 21 to December 18, Qatar is scheduled to host the FIFA World Cup.
After Ghana beat Nigeria to the ticket earlier in March, Nigeria won’t be at the World Cup.
