JUST IN: Many feared dead as 40-feet containers fall on cars in Lagos (Photos)

Tragedy struck at Cele bus top on the Oshodi Apapa expressway, Lagos, after a 40 feet container fell on three vehicles.

According to reports the driver of one of the vehicles, a commercial bus, has been confirmed dead while its passengers and those in the two other vehicles managed to escape.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) gave an update on the occurrence on Thursday afternoon, December 22, 2022.

“An accident happened at PM filling station main carriage way, Inward Cele express involving an upturned 40ft container on a commercial bus.

“Police Officers from Ilasa division are on the ground doing the needful and also effort is on for recovery,” the agency said via its official Facebook page.

In a related development, the Kano State Consumer Protection Council on Thursday disclosed that it has confiscated over 1,200 substandard tricycle tyres within the metropolis.

The CPC Managing Director, Abubakar Ali-Muhammad, said the council received a tip-off about the tyre and immediately swung into action and uncovered the spot, where it was being sold.

He stated this in a press statement made available to newsmen by the council’s spokesman, Musbahu Yakasai, in Kano on Thursday.

“Following an operation at a warehouse located in a Rice Mill Company at Kuyan Ta Inna in Kumbotso Local Government area, where the tyres were stored and sold to tricycle operators at a subsidized price in the state, the tyres were impounded,” the statement read.

Ali-Muhammad urged tricycle owners and riders to always ensure that they bought and used standard spare parts for their tricycles in order to save the lives and property of passengers.

Also, he called on members of the public to voluntarily offer useful information to KSCPC toward achieving their set objectives.

The Managing Director, who reiterated his commitment towards fighting expired, fake and substandard products in commended Dr Abdullahi Ganduje for providing him the opportunity to serve the people of Kano.

In his remarks, the Chairman of Amalgamated Tricycle Owners and Riders Association, Kano, Alhaji Mansur Tanimu, confirmed the association had been receiving reports and complaints from its members about the substandard tyres.

However, he commended the Managing Director of the council for using his discretion to co-opt them in the operation.
