The Supreme Court has affirmed Babajide Sanwo-Olu as the duly elected governor of Lagos State.
The apex court on Friday, affirmed the judgement of the Court of Appeal Lagos, dismissing the appeal of Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of the Labour Party for lacking in merit.
The LP had urged the apex court to hold that the March 18 election was marred by irregularities, and non-compliance with the Electoral Act, adding that Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat was not qualified to contest the election.
However, the court held that there was no evidence to prove that Hamzat renounced his Nigerian citizenship which would make him not qualify to contest the election.
The eight-man panel said that no provision in the constitution strips a Nigerian citizen of his birth of his citizenship even if he voluntarily takes up the citizenship of another country.
Similarly, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Abdulazeez Adediran filed 34 grounds of appeal asking the apex court to upturn the verdict of the Lagos State Governorship Election Tribunal and the Court of Appeal.
The panel is yet to rule on the appeal as of the time of filing this report
