BREAKING: Sultan of Sokoto announces moon sighting, Ramadan begins on Monday in Nigeria

The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has confirmed Monday, March 11, 2024, first day of Ramadan in Nigeria.

The President General, Nigerian Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs stated this in a broadcast at his palace in Sokoto on Sunday evening, March 10, 2024.

He said, “Today Sunday, the 29th Day of Sha’aban 1445 after Hijra of our Noble Prophet Muhammad (SAW), which is equivalent to 10th March, 2024, marks the end of Sha’aban 1445 AH, as the reports of moon sighting were received from Muslim leaders and other organisations across the country, which were duly verified and authenticated by the states and National Moon Sighting Committee.

“Consequently, tomorrow Monday, the 11th March, 2024, becomes the first day of Ramadan, 1445 AH. We therefore call on the Muslims Ummah to commence fasting accordingly.”

Earlier, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia announced the sighting of the lunar month of Ramadan, which will pave the way for the beginning of the Islamic lengthy fasting.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar observed by Muslims worldwide as a month for fasting, prayer, reflection and assisting the needy.
