ASUU Sends Letter Of Commendation To UNIZIK Lecturer Who Was Assaulted

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) branch, has commended Dr. Chukwudi Michael Okoye, a lecturer in the Department of Theatre and Film Studies, for his exemplary composure after being bitten and assaulted by a female student, Goddy-Mbakwe Chiamaka Precious, of the Department of History and International Studies.

The incident occurred when Dr. Okoye excused himself to pass through a hallway where the student was recording a TikTok video. Enraged by the interruption, she attacked him physically, an act that has since sparked widespread condemnation.

In a letter signed by ASUU-UNIZIK Chairman Kingsley Ubaoji and Secretary Joseph Onyejiaka, the union praised Dr. Okoye for his professionalism, stating:

“ASUU wishes to commend Dr. Chukwudi Michael Okoye of the Department of Theatre and Film Studies for his exemplary display of maturity and civility in the face of the recent violent assault on him by a female student, Goddy-Mbakwe Chiamaka Precious, a student of the Department of History and International Studies.

Dr. Okoye’s restraint and composure in the aftermath of the incident are a testament to his character and professionalism. His actions have not only brought honour to himself but also to our union and the university community at large.”

The union also expressed gratitude to the Acting Vice-Chancellor for his swift and decisive response to the matter, which included immediate disciplinary action against the student.

ASUU reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of lecturers while advocating for a safe and respectful academic environment.
