A CALL FOR ACTION: THE NEED TO EQUIP OGBOMOSO FIRE STATIONS
On Saturday, January 25th, during the Operation Keep Ogbomoso Clean initiative organized by the Federation of Ogbomoso Students Union (FOGSU) National Council, a tragic incident unfolded that highlighted a pressing issue in our community.
While we were conducting our cleanup activities near the Ogbomoso Fire Station, a devastating fire broke out in a community in ogbomoso know as Randa Area, a residential building. The response we all hoped for from the fire station was sadly unavailable due to a faulty fire tanker, leaving the community helpless as the fire raged.

FOGSU’s Role in the Incident
As a body dedicated to the progress and well-being of Ogbomoso, members of FOGSU National Council immediately sprang into action.
We rushed to the fire station to see what delayed the firemen from going to the emergency seen and found out that their tanker is faulty which happen to be the only tanker in their station.
While our efforts were heartfelt, the reality is clear: we could not replace the critical services that a functional fire station is meant to provide.
The Bigger Issue is, this incident is not an isolated one. With only one fire station in Ogbomoso, which is itself under equipped, the city is left vulnerable to emergencies. When that single fire station is unable to respond due to faulty equipment or lack of resources, the consequences can be devastating.
The loss of property and the emotional trauma suffered by the victims in this case are stark reminders of the urgent need for action. Ogbomoso deserves better.
A Call to the Oyo State Government
We are calling on the Oyo State Government and relevant authorities to prioritize the safety of Ogbomoso residents by addressing the following:
1. Provision of Functional Fire Tankers: The Ogbomoso Fire Station must be equipped with fully functional and modern fire tankers to ensure swift response during emergencies.
2. Establishment of Additional Fire Stations: As a growing city, Ogbomoso needs multiple fire stations strategically located to serve different areas effectively.
3. Regular Maintenance of Equipment: Routine checks and repairs of fire-fighting equipment should be carried out to avoid situations where emergency response is hindered.
4. Training and Empowerment of Firefighters: Personnel must be adequately trained and equipped to handle various types of emergencies.
Lives and property are at stake. A single fire incident can lead to immeasurable losses, not just in material terms but also in the confidence of the people in the government’s ability to protect them. A functional fire service is not a luxury; it is a necessity for the safety and development of any community.
The Federation of Ogbomoso Students Union remains committed to advocating for the development and well-being of Ogbomoso. This incident has strengthened our resolve to ensure that issues like these are brought to light and addressed. We will continue to work with relevant stakeholders to ensure that Ogbomoso gets the attention it deserves.
Our Conclusion is
This is a wake-up call. The safety of Ogbomoso residents cannot be left to chance. We urge the Oyo State Government to take immediate action to equip the Ogbomoso Fire Station and establish more stations across the city. Together, we can build a safer, more resilient community where emergencies are met with swift and effective responses.
