Many injured as bus conveying UNILORIN students tumbles(Video)
Many people have been severely injured as a bus conveying students tumbled at the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN).
The accident, which occurred on Thursday, July 18, 2024, involved a small commercial bus, popularly called “Korope,”
It crashed close to the school gate as a result of a tire burst while the bus was in motion.
“It happened very close to the school gate,” she said. “About 11 people were on the bus, but I cannot say exactly the number of people involved in the crash.”
An eyewitness said that one of the victims of the accident lost her arm, while another female victim appeared lifeless on the road.
A video of the accident scene circulating in the Ilorin metropolis on Thursday showed victims of the accident on the road writhing in pain, while a female student with blood on her head appeared lifeless on the road.
Another victim, a man in a suit, was struggling to stand up, but had lost control of himself and was falling as he tried to.
Some students have speculated that the unconscious person has died.
However, the school management confirming the incident in a statement issued by its Director, Corporate Affairs for Management, Kunle Akogun said there was no casualities
Akogun said that those involved in the accident were being treated at the school clinic.
The statement reads; “The management of the University of Ilorin is saddened to announce the occurrence of a motor accident on campus this afternoon.
“The lone accident involved a commercial bus conveying ten passengers going out of the campus.
“As soon as it accurred, the University Management immediately commenced rescue operations, and all the victims were moved to the University Health Centre. They were attended to by a team of medical personnel at the University Health Centre.”
“One of them needed advanced treatment and was referred to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) after he wasstabilised.
Four had minor injuries, they were treated and discharged.
“Five victims, consisting of two males, two females and the driver, are currently being treated at the University Health Centre.
“Unfortunately, one of the victims was brought in dead, the body has been transferred to the morgue, and the University management is making efforts to contact the next of kin.
“The Management f regrets this unfortunate incident, condoles with the family of the deceased, and prays God to comfort the family while we pray for a quick recovery of the injured victims.”
