Two students at an Islamiyyah school in the Kuchibiyi community of Bwari Area Council, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) located in an Abuja suburb has been killed while four others were injured during an explosion at the school.
The tragic incident occurred around noon on Monday, January 6, 2025, sending shockwaves through the community, located approximately 42 kilometers from Abuja’s city centre
Premium Times reports that the emergency and security personnel, including a police bomb disposal squad, have arrived at the scene of an explosion, with injured victims rushed to the hospital for treatment.
A security source revealed that the one of the deceased student, whose identity remains unknown, was carrying a substance suspected to be an improvised explosive device (IED) when it detonated.
The explosion injured other students and caused widespread panic at the scene.
The source also disclosed that the students involved were recently admitted to the school, having resumed on January 3, 2025.
However, the police have yet to issue a statement on the incident, leaving details of the explosion unclear.
Three people came with the IEDs
In the report, the police said the three people from Katsina had visited the owner of the Islamiya, Adamu Ashimu. According to them, the visitors came with the explosives.
“Two of them died in the explosion,” the police stated, adding the other person was critically injured and hospitalised.
Mr Ashimu, the owner of the Islamic school, has been arrested, the police said, noting that he will be “interrogated immediately and the outcome would be forwarded.”
No group has claimed responsibility for the explosion in the Nigerian capital.
However, different armed groups including some linked to the Islamic State operate in northern Nigeria.
