JUST IN: Many people fall off buildings in neighbouring Thailand as powerful earthquake hits Myanmar (Video)

A strong earthquake of magnitude 7.7 has struck Myanmar, causing tremors and aftershocks across hundreds of miles of south-east Asia.

The earthquake which occurred on Friday, March 28, 2025, toppled a building in Thai capital, Bangkok, and sparked a race to save civilians and infrastructure near the epicenter.

The United States Geological Survey, USGS, made this known, adding that hundreds of people poured out of swaying buildings in Bangkok, the capital of neighbouring Thailand 1,400km away.

USGS said the quake, which happened on Friday was shallow, at a depth of just 10km (six miles) with the epicentre near the central city of Mandalay, about 50km (30 miles) east of the city of Monywa.

Myanmar’s state-run MRTV television said the military-run government’s emergency proclamation included the capital Naypyitaw and the country’s second largest city Mandalay, near to the epicenter of the first powerful temblor.

Several buildings collapsed in Mandalay, witnesses told the Reuters news agency, and a hospital in the capital trying to deal with mass casualties was among those damaged.

Reuters cited witnesses as saying at least three people were killed in the town of Taungoo in Myanmar when a mosque was severely damaged by the quake, and local media said at least two others were killed and 20 injured when a hotel collapsed in Aung Ban.

There was no confirmation of the casualties from Myanmar authorities.
