Liverpool star Diogo Jota was tragically killed in a car accident at the age of 28, according to CNN Portugal journalist Rui Laura.
The report revealed that Jota was traveling to the northern Spanish port city of Santander to board a ferry bound for England when the fatal crash occurred in Zamora province.
Laura detailed that Jota and his younger brother André Silva had departed from northern Portugal, intending to take a longer land-and-sea journey to ensure Jota’s timely return for Liverpool’s scheduled training on Monday. This alternative route was chosen because doctors had advised Jota not to fly following recent lung surgery.
The brothers’ Lamborghini suffered a tire blowout while overtaking near Zamora city, veered off the road, and caught fire. Both men died at the scene.
The Santander-to-Plymouth ferry was scheduled to depart Thursday at 4:00 p.m. and arrive in England Friday morning at 11:15 a.m. Rui Laura explained, “Jota had recently undergone lung surgery and was told by doctors to avoid air travel. He was heading to Santander to take a ferry across to England and planned to drive the rest of the way to Liverpool. His brother André was accompanying him.”
Journalist Victor Pinto added context: “Diogo Jota was no stranger to traveling overland. He sometimes preferred this route because of mild respiratory discomfort. As we know, there is a regular ferry service linking northern Spain to southern England.”
