JAMB to review 2025 UTME result as candidates, other Nigerians protest over mass failure

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) said it is reviewing the recently released 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) results.

JAMB’s Public Communication Advisor, Dr. Fabian Benjamin disclosed this in a statement on Monday.

IntelRegion reports that over 1.5 million, out of the 1.9 million candidates who sat for this year’s UTME scored below 200 out of a possible 400 marks.

The development sparked widespread dissatisfaction among candidates and their families, many of whom have taken to social media to express concerns over the results and demand a review.

Some candidates have rejected their results, insisting they do not reflect their actual performance.

One parent, Amuzienwa Uchenna, expressed concern after his ward, Amuzienwa Aguruo, scored 169 in the 2025 UTME.

The parent said the candidate has had impressive scores taking the UTME in the last three years, scoring 236, 271, and 290 in 2022, 2023, and 2024, respectively.

“However, to our greatest shock, his most recent (fourth) result, released in 2025, shows a sudden and inexplicable drop to an aggregate score of 169 out of 400, with the following subject scores: Use of English: 45 Physics: 41 Biology: 39 Chemistry: 44,” Mr Uchenna said.

One social media user, @Pennyfabz, who scored 156 expressed concern, saying she had previously scored 285 in the previous edition of the UTME.

“Dear @JAMBHQ, Something is wrong with my result. I’m very confident that this is not what I’m meant to get. Please look into this matter. I’m seriously comforting myself that everything is okay. Please listen to our plea. I can’t go from 285 to 156 💔,” the candidate said.

In a post on X, Mr Onyia asked candidates with concerns about their results to fill a form in preparation for the suit.

“If you’re a student concerned that your JAMB score is significantly lower than expected, and you’re confident there’s an error, please fill this form immediately,” he posted.

“We are taking legal steps by Monday at the Federal High Court to compel JAMB to release the marking sheet and scoring details, so students can verify the accuracy of their results.”

A group of candidates, numbering over 8,000, have reportedly submitted complaints regarding technical glitches experienced during the examination.

Responding in a statement by its spokesperson on Monday, the board said it is fast forwarding its annual system review, a comprehensive post-mortem of the examination process, as a result of the ‘significant volume of unusual complaints’ that followed the release of the 2025 UTME results on Friday.

“If it is determined that there were indeed glitches, we will implement appropriate remedial measures promptly, as we do in the case of the examinations themselves,” the board said

The board said it is particularly concerned about the unusual complaints from a few states within the federation.

According to the statement, the board is scrutinising these complaints in detail to identify and rectify potential technical issues.

JAMB said the annual review encompasses three key stages: registration, examination, and result release.

It explained that during the examination, JAMB ensures that every candidate is afforded the opportunity to sit the test, and should any technical issues arise, the board reschedules the examination for affected candidates.

JAMB said experts have been engaged to assist in the review.

The experts are: “Members from the Computer Professionals Association of Nigeria, Chief External Examiners, who are heads of tertiary institutions, the Educational Association and Research Network in Africa, measurement experts, and Vice Chancellors from various institutions.”
