A funeral service has been held for Diogo Jota and Andre Silva, his brother, in Portugal.
The service was held in the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar church in their hometown of Gondomar near Porto in northern Portugal on Saturday morning.
Many football stars were in attendance, like Bernardo Silva of Manchester City, Bruno Fernandes of Manchester United, who are members of the Portuguese national team. Some Liverpool players, where Jota was playing before his death, like Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson, and Ibrahim Kanoute, among others, were also among the mourners.
Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson presented floral tributes at the church before the ceremony commenced.
Van Dijk carried a red wreath with Jota’s number 20, while Robertson had a wreath featuring number 30, Silva’s number at Portuguese side FC Penafiel.
Jota’s agent, Jorge Mendes, was pictured supporting the bereaved family and escorting the footballer’s mother into the funeral home.
“We lost two great people. Diogo is an example as a person, husband, son, professional. I still can’t believe it. It’s very difficult,” Mendes said tearfully.
After the one-hour church service, the gathering proceeded to a local cemetery where the remains of the late brothers were laid to rest.
Jota and his brother died in the early hours of Thursday after the Lamborghini he was in veered off the road and caught fire in the province of Zamora in Spain.
They were travelling by car from Porto to take a boat from Santander in northern Spain to Plymouth and Portsmouth in the south of England.
Reportedly, Jota was on his way to take a ferry to England for Liverpool’s pre-season training when the accident happened.

He wanted to travel by sea after doctors had advised him against flying, following a minor surgical procedure.
The fatal crash comes less than two weeks after Jota’s wedding to Rute Cardoso on 22 June 2025. The couple had been engaged since 2022. They had three kids together.
